DIY Distressed Mason Jars

Mason jars are really in right now and there are SO many crafts you can do with them. This is TumbleRoot’s favorite mason jar craft! You can choose whatever color you want to paint them with and you can use them any way you want! You can use these awesome distressed mason jars as candle holders, make-up brush holders, or you can even put flowers in them!

Here’s what you’ll need:
A mason jar
Acrylic paint
A paintbrush
Sand paper

The first thing we did was lay out newspaper over our table so we wouldn’t accidentally stain anything! Then we poured a little bit of acrylic paint on to a paper plate and got ready to paint. You may want to wash the jar before you start painting. The first coat of paint took less than two minutes to do! Here’s what our jar looked like after the first coat:

Then you have to wait about 30 minutes to an hour to do the next coat of paint (perfect amount time for a TV break!). We recommend doing two or three coats of paint. Once you’re done painting, you should let the jar dry over night.

Now that you’ve waited a whole night, it’s time to distress the jar! Make sure you still have the newspaper underneath the jar because this part gets kind of messy. All you have to do is take the sandpaper and rub it over the parts of the jar you want distressed. This is our favorite part because there’s absolutely no way to mess it up. You get to decide how little or how much you want to distress the jar! Once you’re done with sanding the jars, you have your finished product! Feel free to use it anyway you’d like (except you probably don’t want to drink out of it)!
